Shuro Houki - Short Broom
Description
Shuro Houki is a traditional Japanese broom made from the bark of the hemp-palm tree. With a history stretching back several centuries, this broom stands out for its durability compared to other Japanese brooms. Notably, the Shuro Houki features a thick broom head designed for comfort and efficiency. Its fine, flexible fibers sweep gently, effectively capturing dust without unsettling dirt. Thanks to its unique design, it doesn't generate static electricity, allowing collected dirt and hair to easily release from the fibers. Furthermore, the gentle nature of the fibers ensures that more delicate surfaces such as wooden floors and tatami matting remain scratch-free. Regular use of Shuro Houki, alongside cleaning cloths, is also reputed to naturally polish floor surfaces over time.
The Kawa Houki design of this particular broom has been a staple household cleaning tool for generations, particularly for sweeping tatami mats or wooden floors. This broom is crafted from fresh hemp-palm bark, which is rolled and bound after being peeled from the tree. The bundles are tied together, and the ends are split to form the broom head.
Once the Shuro Houki has served its purpose indoors and shows signs of wear, it can be repurposed for outdoor use, such as sweeping dirt floors or tending to gardens. The long-lasting nature of Shuro Houki makes it a valued tool, used diligently until it is completely worn out.
